The first celebrated U.S. Labor Day was on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City.
Most Americans think of Labor Day as an American Holiday, but Labor Day has its origins in Canada.
Oregon was the first state to celebrate Labor Day as a legal holiday in 1887.
The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council says that between Memorial Day and Labor Day, Americans eat 7 billion hot dogs.
Labor Day originally was meant to recognize the contributions of the American workforce, and it had strong ties to the labor union movement. Today, it is seen more as a chance to celebrate the “unofficial” last weekend of summer.
Creators decided to pick the first week of September to honor Labor Day because it is between the 4th of July and Thanksgiving.
On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the DC and the territories.
Traditionally people did not wear white or seersucker clothes after Labor Day as it unofficially marked the end of summer.
Labor Day weekend is considered one of the busiest weekends to travel. AAA’s says travel growth over this weekend has grown. Last year, over 35.5 million people hit the road, 85.8% by car.
