Tornado Occurrence & Frequency Trends

While most people associate the southern plains of the central United States with tornadoes, storms can occur throughout the year anywhere in the United States. The frequency of tornadoes align with the progression of warmer weather, so each region may experience increased tornadic activity at different times. It is difficult to forecast how severe a tornado season may be, but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) regularly examines trends associated with tornadic activity. Tornadoes most commonly occur in the late afternoon and early evening hours. The greatest number of tornadoes happen in May and June.
