Blueprints for Success

Are you sure you're protected?

When submitting a one-shot new business submission in GreatBuilderUSA, two questions appear under the “Risk Location” submission screen. One asks for the distance to a fire hydrant, and the other asks for the distance to a fire station. Both of these are considered when determining whether protected or unprotected rates are applicable to a location. When an underwriter is reviewing a submission in GreatBuilderUSA, they will consider a protected location as one that is within five miles of a responding fire station and within 1,000 feet of a fire hydrant. If the fire station is more than five miles from a station or doesn’t have a hydrant within 1,000 feet, the risk is considered to be unprotected. For locations without a hydrant within 1,000 feet, especially at larger values, it is beneficial to indicate the water source that would be used by the responding fire department in the event of a fire under the “Comments/Adjustments” screen.

If you have any questions about protected and unprotected locations, please don’t hesitate to reach out to a member of the Residential Construction team.
