As we celebrate our 40th anniversary insuring non-profit and human service organizations, I want to pause, reflect and say “thank you” to everyone - our policyholders, agents, reinsurers and employees – for continually striving to make our program bigger, better and more resilient than ever before. Your valued relationships, dedicated risk management and expertise have played a large part in our ability to provide you with stable underwriting and responsive claims handling year after year.

Proven Stability

SHS provides insurance to nearly 16,000 non-profits in 200 classes of business, including some of the largest (and smallest) youth recreation organizations, daycares, foundations, churches, fitness centers, schools and zoos in the country. We insure large loss sensitive accounts as well as captives, group associations and risk retention groups. Over the years, we adapted our product offerings and services to meet our policyholders’ needs.

Adapting to a Riskier, Costlier World with an Eye of Caution

We continue to adapt due to the rise of social inflation resulting from an expanding tort environment with increased amount and size of liability verdicts, increased proactive plaintiff attorney advertising and third-party litigation financing, expanded sexual abuse reviver statutes, the #MeToo movement and the rise of social media.

We continue to monitor a riskier world with unprecedented natural catastrophes including wildfires in California, the opioid epidemic, mass violent shootings, new knowledge on traumatic brain injuries, ride sharing, infectious disease outbreak and low fuel cost.

In 2019, economic prosperity and low unemployment increased economic inflation raising the asset values of nearly everything – automobiles, medical costs, salaries, building values, retirement portfolios, legal fees, etc. People are living and working longer than ever before, contributing to higher liability verdicts.

To monitor and stay aware of these trends, I am pleased that we continually adapt to the evolving landscape of risk with our use of predictive analysis in our cost/pricing models, purchasing of reinsurance for protection in case of catastrophes, and the building out of our risk management department and loss control services. These proactive steps have helped stabilize our overall costs/prices throughout all market cycles and helped preserve our historic profitability and retention levels.

The foundation of these collaborative relationships is based on our shared cultural values of loyalty, respect, reliability, dedication, service, knowledge and expertise - all with the ultimate shared goal of stabilizing the long-term costs of risk and insurance for our human and social service policyholders.

Looking forward we plan to play on our strength and identify opportunities to continue our underwriting stability for years to come. By maximizing our uniquely specialized claims expertise, focus on training and development of our acquired talent, and grass roots sales efforts our team is ready to meet demands in a changing market. Other goals include continued pricing and exposure management and advancing technology to help allow for predictable pricing and efficient turnaround for years to come. Lastly, we will look to unveil robust risk management offerings and coverage products that meet the changing risks and needs of nonprofits.

I look at our policyholders, agents, reinsurers and employees as one big team of stakeholders. I am thankful for everyone’s loyalty to each other and our program, especially in today’s turbulent environment. I am thankful for the long-term reinsurance relationships we have in place, some exceeding 20 years! I am also amazed at the increasing number of policyholders that have been with us for 5, 10, 25 and (yes) even 30+ years. In 40 years together, we have built strong commitments and relationships that continually stabilized our program. This is a testament to our commitment to each other and is perhaps my biggest THANK YOU!
