Environmental Team Welcomes Austin Connell

Each issue of Environmental Insider will introduce you to members of our team and describe the unique role they play to support you and your clients.
Great American Insurance Group’s Environmental Division welcomes Austin Connell to its National Underwriting department as an underwriter. Based out of our Boston office, Austin will focus on understanding and assessing environmental liability while producing new business and maintaining existing opportunities for the division.
“I look forward to utilizing my engineering and consulting background to evaluate environmental risks and propose promising coverage solutions to clients,” Austin said.
Austin earned his bachelor’s of science degree in environmental engineering with a minor in environmental economics and policy from the University of Connecticut. While in school, Austin worked as an engineering intern at an environmental technical service company, where he contributed to large-scale bioremediation projects by performing engineering calculations to provide on-site technical support for both private and state agencies serving as clients.
“My initial interest for the environmental field sparked after taking an Advanced Placement Environmental Studies course. I was fascinated with the concept of combining my engineering and sustainability learnings to contribute to environment improvement from a business aspects,” Austin said.
Upon obtaining his degree, Austin began his career as a senior environmental consultant for a leading global consulting engineering company, where he served as a field manager on a variety of large scale remediation projects and supported research around emerging contaminants including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Additionally, Austin focused on providing client regulatory deliverables such as Phase I/II Environmental Assessment to determine status updates. Through assessment, he identified site conditions to determine remedial solutions and report data sets to applicable standards.
“I’m excited to be part of such a team-oriented company. Having a daily collaboration session is a great way to learn a variety of strategic approaches and hear different underwriting perspectives. Training wise, being able to openly communicate has really contributed to my underwriting development so far,” Austin said.
Austin, along with the team of experts at Great American Environmental, can uncover the hidden risks in your clients’ operations and develop a custom program to help protect them. The division offers a complete portfolio of environmental insurance products, including contractor’s and fixed premises pollution liability insurance that work across the U.S., U.S. territories, Canada and other select countries.
