Environmental Team Welcomes Ryan Smith

In an effort to ensure we are the insurance company of choice for environmental insurance brokers, it is important we establish a strong and dynamic team. Each issue of Environmental Insider will introduce you to members of our team and describe the unique role they play to support you and your clients.

Ryan Smith

Great American Insurance Group’s Environmental Division welcomes Ryan Smith to its Technical Support department as a Senior Loss Control Consultant. Capitalizing on his environmental science and sustainability expertise, he will provide site evaluation and prevention assessment to support underwriters in risk identification. Ryan will be stationed in our Boston office.

Ryan is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science with a focus in ecological technology and design. Recently, he completed his Master of Business Administration in corporate sustainability, risk management and innovation strategy from Boston University.

“I’ve always had an interest for environmental science and the concept of harnessing nature for sustainable engineering solutions,” Ryan said.

During his studies, Ryan worked for the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston as an environmental educator and volunteered with several non-profit organizations including Save the Bay, whose mission is to restore and protect Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island’s marine environment. While obtaining his MBA, Ryan worked for Boston University’s Institute for Sustainable Energy where he conducted industry research to support alternative energy investigations and contributed successfully to a white paper composition on multi-user microgrid development.

Ryan has accumulated almost a decade of environmental consulting experience working for a nationally recognized engineering, science and operations consulting firm. His project experience includes CERCLA sediment removal projects, vapor intrusion assessments, as well as soil and groundwater investigations at multiple state and federal remediation sites in Massachusetts and the greater New England area.

Ryan’s career began as an entry-level Scientist I. With rapidly increasing responsibilities, he was tasked with orchestrating all facets of investigation, design and implementation for wide ranging environmental consulting scenarios and magnitudes, including large scale remediation projects at state and federal priority sites.

Most recently, he served as a Technical Specialist, overseeing daily project execution at a multi-phase CERCLA remediation site. Within his role, Ryan was responsible for assessing sub-contractor performance, interpreting analytical data trends, developing technical reports, and streamlining communications among internal and external stakeholders while mentoring new field staff members.

While serving as a technical specialist, Ryan was also a member of the company’s internal Green and Sustainable Remediation/ Resiliency (GSR/R) team where he primarily evaluated methods to execute projects in more energy efficient and environmentally sustainable ways including, spearheading “Sustainability Plan” frameworks for new projects, quantifying site operations in terms of volumes remediated versus emissions and energy use as well as evaluating the cost-benefit of different remediation techniques and site re-uses.

“With my education and professional background, I saw the environmental insurance field as a promising next step in my career,” Ryan said. “One aspect that attracted me to Great American is that my role is not strictly geared toward technical consulting and allows for new opportunities to expand my professional horizon such as working with marketing to develop campaigns supporting our underwriting team, leveraging my industry expertise.”

Ryan, along with the team of experts at Great American Environmental, can help uncover the hidden risks in your clients’ operations and develop a custom program to help protect them. The Division offers a complete portfolio of environmental insurance products, including contractor’s and fixed premises pollution liability insurance that work across the U.S., U.S. territories, Canada and other select countries.

Welcome, Ryan! We look forward to seeing you prosper in your new role.
