Environmental Team Welcomes Scott Tardif

Scott TardifScott Tardif, Environmental Underwriter, National Underwriting—New York Office

In effort to ensure we are the insurance company of choice for environmental insurance brokers, it is important we establish a strong and dynamic team. Each issue of Environmental Insider will introduce you to members of our team and describe the unique role they play to support you and your clients.

Great American Environmental welcomes Scott Tardif to its National Underwriting department as an underwriter. In his role, Scott will focus on strengthening valuable relationships and business opportunities for the division. By leveraging his technical expertise and project management background, Scott will successfully assist the team’s development efforts and offer best-in-class environmental solutions to clients.

“Scott’s background is a great fit for our team and will enhance his role as an underwriter. His prior experience with NYC’s Office of Environmental Remediation (OER) is also beneficial to our division as he can help us understand the regulatory perspective when we are collaborating on opportunities,” said Heather Boyd , Senior Production Underwriting Manager

Scott earned his bachelor degrees in environmental science, biology, and forensic science with a minor in chemistry from the University of New Haven. After school, Scott actively volunteered for local town water and wetlands commissions. He has a passion for environmental sustainability, and was responsible for reviewing site plans and issuing permits for local wetlands and watercourses in order to minimize the impact of development efforts on regulated areas.

After graduation, Scott worked as a field technician for a specialized environmental engineering firm, providing monitoring and maintenance services for a variety of landfill gas-related projects. As a technician, Scott routinely performed site visits to post-closure landfills to evaluate methane extraction systems throughout the New England and New York region.

Scott later obtained his master’s in hydrology from the University of Connecticut. While interning with the Connecticut Department of Public Health, he conducted an extensive state-wide risk assessment on public water systems for the emergent contaminant per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Throughout his graduate career, Scott focused his research on hydrologic watersheds, utilizing the Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). He participated in numerous hydrologic modeling studies, one of which compared the developmental effects on landscape positions, testing both the urban Hockanum River and rural Pomperaug River watersheds.

Prior to joining Great American, Scott served as a project manager for the New York City Mayor’s Office of Environmental Remediation (OER), providing regulatory oversight for redevelopment projects enrolled with OER for hazardous soil, air quality, or noise attenuation designations to ensure conformation to applicable environmental standards. Through his regulatory efforts, he reviewed and revised Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, as well as Phase III Remedial Action and Closure Reports to ensure all remedial activities were completed and documented accurately.

“I am looking forward to learning more about the environmental insurance industry and the different risks within the field as I progress as an underwriter,” Scott said. “Everyone at Great American has been extremely helpful and welcoming – I’m excited to be part of such a collaborative team!”

Scott, along with the team of the experts at Great American Environmental, can assist in uncovering the hidden risks in your clients’ operations and develop a custom program to help protect them. The division offers a complete portfolio of environmental insurance products, including contractor’s and fixed premises pollution liability insurance that work across the U.S., U.S. territories, Canada and other select countries.
