Congratulations to Alec Ballman, son of employee Brian Ballman and stepson of employee Diana Ballman, and Jack Reynolds, son of employee Matt Reynolds. Our parent company, American Financial Group, named them both as the 2018 AFG Scholarship recipients.

About Alec

Alec is graduating from Covington Catholic High School in Park Hills, Kentucky. He will attend the University of Kentucky Lewis Honors College, where he plans to major in Biology.

Alec has excelled in various activities and leadership roles throughout his high school career. He was a member of the baseball, cross country, and track and field teams, and was named captain of the cross country team his senior year. He also participated in the Reach and Teach Tutoring Program and the St. Elizabeth Medical Observation Opportunity Network Shadowing Program. Alec was Vice President of the National Honor Society, actively involved in the National English Honor Society and a 2018 TEAMS Competition Kentucky State Champion.

Alec is the recipient of several awards and scholarships, including:

  • National Merit Scholarship
  • AP Scholar with Distinction
  • The Kentucky High School Athletic Association Academic All-State
  • The University of Kentucky Patterson Scholarship

About Jack

Jack is graduating from Dreher High School in Columbia, South Carolina. He will attend the University of South Carolina Honors College, where he plans to major in Chemical Engineering.

Jack has excelled in various activities and academics throughout his high school career. He was President of National Honor Society and was his high school's Math Team Captain, where he participated in numerous academic tournaments. He was a National Chemistry Olympiad Qualifier and received a perfect math score on the SAT test. Jack was also a cross country and track runner, a tutor for St. Joseph Catholic School, a Junior Counselor for Camp Gravatt and was active in the youth group and missions at Eastminster Presbyterian Church.

Jack is the recipient of several awards and scholarships, including:

  • National Merit Scholarship
  • University of South Carolina Honors Scholarship
  • South Carolina Palmetto Fellows Scholarship
  • The Broughton L. Baker Chemical Engineering Scholarship

Additionally, Jack was the College of Charleston Math Meet Sprint Winner, recipient of the Yale Book Award and named a “Legend in the Making” by Richland School District.

Committed to the Future

AFG awarded its first scholarship in 1967. Over the past 51 years, the Company has awarded 150 scholarships to the sons and daughters of our employees. To compete for the scholarships, students who are entering college in 2019 must take the PSAT/NMSQT during their junior year.
