As Divisional President of Great American Insurance Group’s Environmental Division, Mark is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of environmental insurance and a driving force behind many of the products, underwriting practices and professional standards that define the industry today.
Mark’s professional journey began not in insurance, but in environmental science and consulting. Early in his career, he worked in environmental field operations and health and safety for a hazardous waste processing company, gaining firsthand experience managing complex environmental risks. That technical foundation would later become a defining strength, informing his underwriting philosophy and enabling him to bridge the gap between environmental science and insurance in ways few others could at the time.
Building a Market From the Ground Up
When pollution liability insurance first emerged, there was no established roadmap for underwriters to follow. In fact, Mark was only the second underwriter ever to write pollution liability coverage. At a time when environmental risks were largely uninsured and poorly understood, he helped develop the industry’s first environmental insurance products, creating practical solutions for exposures that had previously fallen outside the traditional insurance marketplace.

In one of his previous positions, he led an operation of approximately 300 employees writing environmental and casualty insurance for a wide range of risks, while maintaining a focus on disciplined underwriting and sustainable, long-term profitability.
